Lois receives a call that Lucy has resurfaced in Smallville. However, Lucy is not the rebellious teen Lois remembers. She is calm, serene, and disturbingly devoted to a cult-like group called the "Inverse Method," led by a mysterious figure known as Ally Allston. Lucy claims the Method helped her "let go of pain."
The title refers not only to family bonds but also to the literal and metaphorical restraints holding the Kent-Lane-Irons family together—and threatening to tear them apart. Cold Open: A flashback to 1985 in Metropolis shows a young woman, Lucy (Lois’s younger sister), running away from home after an argument with General Sam Lane. She disappears into the night, setting up the emotional core of the episode.
Meanwhile, Jonathan continues his desperate attempts to trigger his Kryptonian powers—lifting tractor tires, running sprints—only to collapse in frustration. Jordan, now confident in his abilities, tries to help but only deepens Jonathan’s sense of inadequacy.
The B-plot follows Natalie Irons, who has built a makeshift power suit in her basement. She confronts her father, John Henry, demanding to help fight Superman’s enemies. John Henry refuses, still haunted by the loss of his Earth’s Lois Lane. The emotional climax comes when Natalie screams, "I’m not her, Dad. I’m me. And I need you to see that."
