In the southwestern coast of India, nestled between the backwaters of Kerala and the Western Ghats, lies a lesser-known village called . The name comes from two Malayalam words: Thira (wave) and Mala (hill) — meaning “hills that rise like waves.”
In the 1920s, a British geologist named Harold Thorne visited Thiramala and documented how the villagers used traditional knowledge to quarry stone without causing landslides — a technique that modern engineers later studied as an early model of sustainable mining.
Centuries ago, Thiramala was a trading post for spices like black pepper and cardamom. But its real treasure was later discovered beneath the soil: , a unique red rock perfect for building. Villagers cut the stone from the hills, and over time, the hills themselves appeared to have “waves” of red, orange, and brown.
