Dr. Lena shifted the microscope’s focus. The papyrus fragment, no bigger than her palm, showed faint ink strokes in Demotic script. Most scholars would have catalogued it as a laundry list or a tax receipt. But Lena had spent ten years learning to read the ghosts of a text—the erased layers beneath the visible words.
She pointed to the deepest layer—the faint line of poetry.
