But when he lumbered outside, he didn’t see Don Karnage’s Iron Vulture or Mad Dog’s raiders. Instead, a battered, smoke-belching cargo plane—a vintage Condor-19 —limped through the city’s cliff-side defense cannons, its landing gear groaning. The plane belly-flopped onto the Higher for Hire dock, skidded through a stack of empty fuel barrels, and came to rest against Wildcat’s tool shed.

What followed was a twenty-minute chase through collapsing aqueducts, a fight atop a rotating stone gear the size of a barn, and a moment where Kit—riding his airfoil through a lightning-charged tunnel—managed to reverse the polarity of the generator just as Karnage was about to overload it.

Rebecca sighed. “Wildcat, fuel the Sea Duck . Baloo, no loop-de-loops over the temple of doom.” The flight was smooth until it wasn’t. As they crossed the Storm Belt, the sky turned the color of a bruise. Lightning struck so close that Kit’s airfoil glowed. But the compass—now floating in a cup of water in the cockpit—pointed unerringly upward.
