The film is a prequel to The Scorpion King , focusing on the origin story of Mathayus (played by Michael Copon, replacing Dwayne Johnson). The story follows a young Mathayus in ancient Akkad, who witnesses the murder of his father at the hands of the corrupt and powerful General Sargon. To avenge his father's death, Mathayus trains to become an elite warrior and assassin. He joins the Black Scorpions, a legendary guard, but after being betrayed, he and his friend Ari must seek out a mythical sword and the goddess Astarte to gain the power needed to defeat Sargon, who has made a deal with a demonic bull god.
