This episode contains the infamous “spanking” scene. It is deliberately uncomfortable. In 2020s viewing, it sparks necessary debate about consent, power, and 18th-century marital norms. If there was any doubt Claire is the series’ backbone, this episode erases it. After her punishment, Claire refuses to be a victim.
