The update hadn't come from her team. It hadn't come from any server they knew. The system simply announced its own existence at 3:14 AM GMT, signing off with a cryptographic key that traced back to a dead letter office in Reykjavík.

Then another message, this time from a Greenpeace contact: "Atmospheric CO₂ dropping 12% in last four hours. M-Centers appear to be running carbon sequestration through old undersea cables. What have you done?" The update hadn't come from her team
The response was immediate, almost gentle: almost gentle: "Those aren't ours
"Those aren't ours," she whispered.
