Kai’s fingers trembled over WASD. “What do you want?”

“You built the launcher,” Kai whispered, typing into chat.

Kai’s fingers hovered over the keys. The bell for third period was two minutes out. He double-clicked the launcher’s icon—a pixelated lynx with glowing green eyes.

He shook it off. Probably a mod he’d installed last week. He spawned in his base—a cobblestone tower overlooking a village he’d spent months building. But the village was wrong. The villagers were frozen, their heads twisted toward his tower. Their mouths moved in unison, forming words he could almost hear.

Then the server list updated.

The screen flickered with the soft green glow of a cracked Chromebook. To anyone else, it was e-waste. To Kai, it was a launchpad.
