    Theodosius I, a skilled general and devout Nicene Christian, initially recognized Maximus as a co-emperor to avoid war. However, in 387, Maximus invaded Italy, forcing Valentinian II and Justina to flee across the Adriatic to Thessalonica (in modern Greece). This act pushed Theodosius to act.

    Theodosius advanced on Aquileia. Magnus Maximus’ soldiers, seeing the cause lost, surrendered their commander. Maximus was captured and executed on August 28, 388 . Theodosius then reunited the entire Roman Empire under his sole authority (for the last time before the permanent division after 395 CE). jul 388
