Orso’s final speech is perhaps the most heartbreaking moment Abercrombie has ever written, proving that being a "good man" is the surest way to lose the game of thrones. Killing these men doesn’t bring satisfaction; it brings guilt, emptiness, and more violence. Monza realizes she was never a hero—she was a tyrant who enjoyed bloodshed. Her journey from cold vengeance to reluctant leadership is one of the most nuanced character studies in modern fantasy. Abercrombie is a master of the "fake hero." In the original trilogy, Jezal dan Luthor begins as a vain, lazy, pompous fencing champion who thinks the world owes him admiration. They are liars, torturers, cripples, cowards, and narcissists. They fail constantly. They relapse into bad habits. And yet, by the final page, you might just love them. But we love them because they are honest about the human condition. They don't do the right thing because it's right; they do it because they're scared, or greedy, or too tired to run. They change—but rarely for the better. And in that grim, realistic failure, we see ourselves more clearly than in any shining knight.
