Is BS 7671 the Law? Or Just a Very Expensive Suggestion?
Have you ever seen a deviation from BS 7671 hold up in court because the electrician proved an "equivalent level of safety"? I’ve never seen it happen. is bs7671 statutory
Let’s settle the debate:
In the eyes of a coroner, a judge, or the HSE, It is the yardstick by which your competence is measured. The One Place You Can (Mostly) Ignore It? Interestingly, private dwellings (your own home, if you are the owner-occupier and not renting it out) are the grey area. Part P of Building Regulations applies, but enforcement is reactive. However, if you ignore BS 7671 in your own home and it burns down, your insurance will be void. That is a statutory contract law issue. The Bottom Line Don't argue semantics. If it’s not to BS 7671, it’s wrong. Is BS 7671 the Law
Treat the book as if it were statutory. Because the moment something goes wrong, the law will treat it exactly the same way. I’ve never seen it happen
Consider this legal sandwich:
If you’ve ever been on a site and heard someone say, “But the regs don’t apply here, it’s not a legal requirement,” you’ve witnessed one of the most dangerous (and common) misunderstandings in the electrical industry.
