Massively multiplayer online games require low-latency access to avatar records. We propose a composite index on (user_id, realm_id, last_login) to accelerate avatar selection screens. Experiments with 10 million synthetic avatars show a 94% reduction in query latency.

This paper argues that avatars function as indexes of the user’s real-time actions, intentions, and even emotional states. Unlike icons or symbols, the avatar’s movements point to a living human at a keyboard.
