Evocacions Santillana Upd -

1. Introduction Evocacions (Evocations) is a piano suite composed by Joaquín Rodrigo (1901–1999) in 1951 . While Rodrigo is globally famous for his Concierto de Aranjuez for guitar and orchestra, Evocacions represents an important, though lesser-known, work in his catalog. The piece is programmatically linked to Santillana del Mar , a historic town in Cantabria, northern Spain. The work captures the composer’s emotional and visual impressions of the town’s medieval architecture, Romanesque art, and timeless atmosphere. 2. Historical and Biographical Context In 1951, Rodrigo traveled to Santillana del Mar with his wife, the Turkish-born pianist Victoria Kamhi. Santillana is famous for its well-preserved medieval streets, the Collegiate Church of Santa Juliana (from which the town derives its name), and its proximity to the Altamira Caves. Rodrigo, who had been blind since early childhood, experienced the town through sound, texture, smell, and the vivid descriptions provided by his wife. This sensory immersion led to the creation of Evocacions , a work that translates physical and historical impressions into musical language. 3. Structure and Musical Analysis The suite consists of three movements, each evoking a different aspect of Santillana’s character.
