The celebration is interrupted when the station’s sun-filter shields fail, causing the observation deck to overheat. The Doctor realizes someone is sabotaging the event. The culprit is the station's steward, a reprogrammed (an "Adherent") acting on behalf of the last pure human, Lady Cassandra O'Brien.Δ17 , a surgically altered human who is now nothing but a stretched face on a frame. Cassandra plans to profit by destroying the station and selling its salvage, while simultaneously eliminating the "impure" alien guests.

The event is a high-society "end of the world" party, attended by bizarre and unique alien guests representing the last surviving races of the universe. Rose meets a humanoid "Adherent of the Waiting" and a living lump of flesh called the Moxx of Balhoon, but the most poignant guest is the (a giant, ancient, psychic face in a tank) and his companion, Jabe (a tree-humanoid from the Forest of Cheem). doctor who episode aired may 2 2005

The Doctor works with Jabe to stop the cascade of failures. Jabe sacrifices herself to send a warning to the Doctor, who ultimately restores the shields with seconds to spare. The station survives long enough to witness the Earth burn, a stunning and melancholic visual. Cassandra is "killed" when her life-support skin dries out, though she humorously teleports her remains away at the last second. Cassandra plans to profit by destroying the station
