1. Introduction Chiapas, officially the Free and Sovereign State of Chiapas ( Estado Libre y Soberano de Chiapas ), is located in southeastern Mexico. It borders Tabasco to the north, Veracruz to the northwest, Oaxaca to the west, the Pacific Ocean to the south, and the Republic of Guatemala to the east. According to the Mexican Constitution, the state’s political division is structured into three main levels: municipalities ( municipios ), intrastate regions (for administrative planning), and, for electoral purposes, districts . 2. Municipal Division (Municipios) The most fundamental unit of political and administrative division in Chiapas is the municipality. As of the latest reforms (2023–2024), Chiapas is divided into 124 municipalities .
