“Okay, Leo.”

“We’re back for real. Aizen evolves into a butterfly-demon-god. Ichigo uses the ‘Final Getsuga Tensho’—an attack that makes him become the Getsuga. He sacrifices all his powers. The fight is short, weird, and emotional. Aizen loses not because Ichigo is stronger, but because Ichigo makes him feel lonely. Then Ichigo loses his powers. The screen goes white. And for a moment, the story feels over. That’s the end of the original run for many fans.”

“This is where it starts,” Leo said, leaning back. “Rukia Kuchiki shows up in Ichigo’s bedroom. He’s a punk with a heart of gold who can see ghosts. She’s a Soul Reaper with attitude. He accidentally steals her powers, and suddenly he’s fighting a giant monster moth. This season is pure, unpolished magic. It’s clunky, the animation is old, and the soundtrack will get stuck in your head for years. You meet Uryu the archer, Chad the gentle giant, and Orihime with her hairpins. This season, Maya, is why we fell in love.”

Leo’s phone buzzed on the arm of the worn-out couch. It was a text from his little sister, Maya, who had just started college.

He hung up. On the couch, the phone buzzed again. A new text.

“Another big filler arc. This time, the spirits of the Soul Reapers’ swords rebel and take human form. It’s a crazy, fun ‘what if.’ Murumasa, the main villain, is actually well-written. Does it matter to the main plot? Not at all. But you get to see Zangetsu as a grumpy old man and Rukia’s sword, Sode no Shirayuki, as a beautiful ice queen. It’s a guilty pleasure season. Watch it while you fold laundry.”

“Don’t skip the Bount arc. Just this once. For me.”
