Abstract Barcode technology represents one of the most significant innovations in the realm of Automated Identification and Data Capture (AIDC). Since its commercial inception in the 1970s, the barcode has transitioned from a simple linear representation of data to a complex family of 2D symbologies capable of storing substantial information. This paper provides a comprehensive examination of barcode technology, including its historical development, underlying operational principles (symbology, scanners, decoders), comparative analysis of major barcode types (UPC, Code 128, QR, Data Matrix), and its critical applications across logistics, healthcare, retail, and manufacturing. Finally, the paper addresses current limitations and explores future trajectories, including integration with the Internet of Things (IoT) and blockchain technologies.
